Sophie’s sculptures translate thoughts into solid forms and her motivations are about connection, understanding people and the world.
Aiming to evoke feelings in viewers, the forms she makes slip from figuration to abstraction to tell their tales better. Her permanent sculpture is ceramic, resin and bronze, and she also makes pieces in more temporary natural materials that disintegrate over time.
Diverse collections explore themes such as the human body, animals, dance, buildings and archetypes. She also makes silly narrative pieces, an antidote to serious love and pain of other subjects. She has made many portraits over the years, and designed original sculpture for garden ornament companies: Buddhas and birdbaths, owls, ogres, obelisks and a fair few fairies.
A long standing teacher, she currently runs short courses at the Royal West of England Academy.
Born in West Dorset in 1950s, she grew up in Yorkshire and trained at Winchester Art School before moving to London, and returning to live in the South West of England in the 1980s.
