Benjamin Warner was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1970. He studied at Falmouth School of Art, before going on to work as an illustrator in London for 15 years. On returning to Cornwall he has worked full time as an artist.
Drawing from the legacy of Turner and Whistler, he explores the emotional and transient aspects of the natural world, focusing on the interplay between water, sky, and land. His seascapes and landscapes evoke the same sense of mystery and sublime beauty found in the work of his predecessors, but through a contemporary lens. Where Turner’s works are expansive and dramatic, Warner’s compositions are more intimate. Warner’s paintings are characterized by their ethereal, atmospheric quality.
He often portrays quiet moments on the edge of dusk or dawn, when the world seems to pause in the in-between light. The palette is dominated by soft, muted tones—pale blues, deep indigos, greys, and translucent whites—which evoke the ethereal qualities of fog, mist, or the fading light of twilight. His works appear luminous, almost as if the landscape is illuminated from within, creating a sense of quiet reverence.
While Warner’s landscapes are often moody and atmospheric, they are not devoid of hope. His depictions of light breaking through storm clouds or the quiet beauty of dawn or dusk suggest that, despite the turbulence of the natural world, there is always a moment of calm and beauty to be found.
