Belinda Millar is a predominantly en plein air landscape artist based in Oxfordshire. Her love for the outdoors echoes in her practice, working physically in the landscape on expressive pieces which capture the movement and feeling of a day. Each piece is a testament to the ever-changing light, shifting horizons, and the immersive experience of painting outdoors, which allows Millar to connect with the natural world in a multisensory way. Belinda chooses always to work on a fluorescent pink ground, which injects a sense of play and a luminous glow to the work. Bold brushstrokes, and vibrant colour palettes feature heavily in her wok- shifting and changing along with the seasons.
Belinda trained at UCA Epsom, specialising in fine art and illustration. Belinda now exclusively focuses on painting, working in mainly in acrylic.
She is represented by galleries across the UK, and collected internationally.
“I am a landscape artist, living in Oxfordshire and working all over the country. I paint nearly all of my landscapes en plein air, choosing to work physically out on location to create each piece.
Simply, my work is about the land and its all encompassing beauty, exploring how it shifts and develops through the seasons, (watching how the colours unfold week by week) with a particular interest in farmland and how boundary demarcations make up a beautiful living tapestry.
My sketchbooks and paintings act in way of a diary, denoted by dates in my sketchbooks and What3Words locations on the reverse of all of my paintings documenting where I have been.
Though semi abstracted pieces, I encourage the viewer to remember, imagine and look a little closer at what we are lucky enough to be surrounded by every day.
Painting en plein air allows for editing of a place, deliberately choosing to leave out structures in the majority of my work, forcing the focus to remain on the land and nature rather than manmade elements.
All of my work, regardless of scale or subject matter, is painted on a fluorescent pink ground, which has fast become my signature and recognisable style. Deliberately leaving small pops of pink to peek through the surface of the paining, injecting fizz, vibrancy and a sense of play into each piece.”
