Simon Jewell was born in 1972 in Oxford. A painter and photographer, he developed an early interest in drawing receiving an Art Scholarship at the age of 13. After leaving school he studied at Falmouth and Lincoln Art College’s and in 1992 left with an HND in Graphics and illustration, after which he moved back to Oxford to join his father’s Architectural practice as an Architectural Assistant / draftsman where he worked for the next 18 years. In 2008 he moved to Cornwall his wife Rebecca to re-kindle his connection and passion for the Arts. Now settled on the Lizard Peninsula where he continues to paint from his Studio.
“I mostly paint in oils, acrylic and avoid using a brush where possible, using palette knife, fingers and found objects building up layers of texture with paint. My work aims to convey a mood and a distilled sense of space. My subject matter is predominantly of the Cornish land and coastline of the Lizard Peninsula. The countryside is so diverse here. There is no better place to reconnect with one’s surroundings and to capture the untamed and ethereal beauty of the landscape.”
